Agrico Cooperation is proud to present its new potato product entitled Carisma today. Carisma is the first potato product that contains slow-release carbohydrates by nature. Slow-release carbohydrates ensure that your body receives dosed energy. This results in feeling hungry less quickly. This potato fits superbly into a health-conscious diet.

The introduction of Carisma sees Agrico responding to consumer needs for responsible and healthy nutrition. Jan van Hoogen, general director of Agrico: “As large producer and cooperative of growers we are specifically aware of the contribution we can offer to healthy nutrition with our potatoes. In this way we effectively monitor global trends and developments in this area. We have seen for some time that consumers become more conscious and increasingly critical about what they eat, how their food is produced and the way a food pattern can contribute to a health-conscious life. Carisma offers consumers a solution thanks to its unique composition.”

Carisma was created by a natural blend of a combination of already existing potato varieties. Every year Agrico´s research centre blends many potato varieties with each other. The varieties which come from this are subsequently assessed on specific characteristics and properties which match the current and future requirements of growers and consumers. The fact that Carisma turned out to contain slow-release carbohydrates was discovered by an extensive screening of the nutritional value of various potato varieties.

Carisma was developed with the assistance of partners in Australia, where scientists and growers have been searching since 2008 for a potato which would fit a Low GI diet. Australia is a global leader in the area of knowledge and research into low GI. The Glycemic Index Foundation is also based in Australia, the organization which certifies products. Carisma was brought onto the Australian market in 2010. Now more than 3.5 million packages are sold annually.

Carisma launch in CORPUS

On Friday 26 June at CORPUS in Leiden, Agrico director Jan van Hoogen presented the potato innovation to invited press, food professionals and interested parties from the medical world. At this perfect location, where the human body is central, Wim Saris, professor of Human Nutrition at the Maastricht University, put the introduction into a societal context. He explained what the role of a low Glycemic Index (low GI) is in a healthy diet. And he also explained how slow-release carbohydrates are the basis for a low GI value.
Naturally it was possible to taste the Carisma potatoes. Former top chef Paul van Staveren has already prepared Carisma potatoes in a variety of delicious ways and gave the visitors his interpretation of contemporary applications of this potato in the food and beverage industry, care institutions and home cooking.

Carisma can be purchased in the Netherlands at 850 Albert Heijn locations and 130 Emté locations.
